Issue:
When opening an Excel Spreadsheet the ribbon at the top becomes unresponsive.
When opening any Excel file from network or c: drive; (it happens intermittently on all files). One time it will work fine, one time it will not. If the user launches Excel and does File | Open and points to the file, it works properly everytime. If he goes to the network shared folder or local drive and clicks on the file to launch it, it locks up most of the time. He can't click on anything in the ribbon at the top of the page, no response. The only thing that works is the red X to close the file (sometimes that does not even work), it does give you the option to save the changes each time however.
Sometimes if you minimize then maximize the Excel file displayed, the ribbon will be accessible again
The Ribbon has multiple display options to fit your preferences, but with an errant click, you can unintentionally hide your Ribbon. To quickly show the Ribbon, click any tab, for example, the Home or Insert tab. To show the Ribbon all the time, click the arrow (Excel 2013) or pushpin icon (Excel 2016) on the lower-right corner of the Ribbon. Change the language Office uses in its menus and proofing tools. Fix:
In Windows explorer remove the preview pane
The issue presents itself when previewing the file when you open it, which causes the ribbon to crash because of a bug with the preview pane.
You can open the file from inside of Excel. (Open Excel > File > Open > Navigate to your file) And the ribbon doesn't crash.
Either closing the underlying file listing (explorer window), or turning off preview altogether completely solves the problem.
